U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries are expected to discuss how federal immigration enforcement is affecting Houston workers, small businesses and families during a news conference Monday.
The 12:45 p.m. news conference follows a roundtable with Houston workers, business owners and community leaders focused on the economic effects of the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts, according to an announcement from Garcia’s office.
Garcia, who represents Texas’ 29th Congressional District, and Jeffries, who represents New York’s 8th Congressional District, are expected to address concerns about the impact of immigration enforcement on the city’s workforce, small businesses and cost of living.
The discussion is also expected to focus on fear and uncertainty among families and communities across the Houston region.
Elsa Flores, president of SEIU Texas, is also scheduled to participate.
The event is being promoted by Democratic leaders as a discussion of the economic impact of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.
