The Ice Hockey World Cup without Russia is now ancient history. In a press release issued this Friday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered the reinstatement with immediate effect of Russia to international hockey competitions organized by the International Hockey Federation (IIHF). This includes all World Championships (men’s, women’s and junior), but not the Olympic Games.
The IIHF expressed its disappointment with this decision in a press release issued immediately. “The IIHF disputes this aspect of the decision and maintains that the measures it took were necessary to ensure the safety and security of all participants, as well as to preserve the integrity of its competitions,” it is written.
The International Federation continues: “While it respects the authority of the CAS and will comply with its decision, the IIHF emphasizes that this verdict does not eliminate the concerns that motivated its previous decisions. This decision also has important practical consequences for competitions whose preparations are already well advanced. Any changes to the list of participants require thorough coordination with the relevant national federations, organizing committees and host country authorities.”
The 2027 Men’s World Cup will be held in Germany, in Mannheim and Düsseldorf, next May. As for the women’s competition, it will take place in November in Quebec, Canada.
